Potty Training A Girl

I get many questions about the differences in potty training girls versus potty training boys. I feel like I say this constantly and I’ll say it again because it’s important. There is no difference when potty training girls as opposed to boys. Period.

Yes, later in life, girls and boys tend to think, emote and process information in different manners. However, we’re talking about 2 year olds here. There is just no difference. Pee and poop are normal bodily functions. To suggest a difference approach according to gender is akin to saying girls get hungry different than boys so be sure to teach them to use a fork differently. It really doesn’t make sense.

You are going to approach potty training girls the same manner as you would a boy. If you know me at all, you know my shtick is about big companies making potty training out to be a big deal; to scare you into keeping your child in diapers longer than necessary. (If you don’t know me, feel free to check me out at Who Is Jamie?)

The only reason I can think of for even planting the thought that potty training girls is different than boys is to sell you something. Girl pull ups, anyone? Or how about a girly potty training chart? Yeah, you might want to read what I have to say about potty training charts too (it ain’t pretty).

Don’t make yourself crazy thinking there’s a challenge here that doesn’t exist.
