A Chart For Potty Training?

Okay. I have to admit this. The first time a client asked me about a potty training chart, I had to google it. It was a big WTF moment for me. Seriously. WTF?

So these days, you can get a potty training chart with all kinds of themes and designs. These are basically logs; so you can track when your child pees and poops. And they come with stickers, so you can reward your child for using the potty. Sick, I tell you.

Here’s my problem with a potty training chart, any kind of potty chart.

First off: Please, please see my Major Roadblocks To Potty Training Success video to see why you should never, ever set up a rewards system.

Second: I’m assuming you are potty training your first, maybe second child. This is a big f-ing deal. You are going to be on your child like white on rice for the first couple of days. If you can’t remember when your child last went, you have bigger problems than potty training. Okay, but let’s assume you’re a little frazzled and just want to write it down or have the babysitter write it down or whatever. Dang…is anything wrong with just a regular piece of paper and pencil? Why have a special chart? (hint: you have BUY them)

Third: The different designs of these are clearly “boy” and “girl”, which perpetuates the big myth that somehow potty training boys and girls is different. (Ahhh…but you watched the Myth Video, so now you are clear on THAT issue).

Fourth: Most of the websites selling these charts are big diaper companies. Really? I just love how the new marketing campaign is that these companies are trying to help you potty train. They are muddling the issue nice and thick these days.

Bottom line: a potty training chart is like a happy meal toy. Not a bad idea in the moment but overall, crappy and useless.
